WHAT IS THE MIDDLE GROUND PROJECT?

The Middle Ground Project is a podcast and storytelling initiative that documents conversations with people working across agriculture, conservation and the community.

Through long-form interviews and stories, the project captures practical knowledge, lived experience and on-the-ground realities that are often missing from public debate. By bringing these voices together in one space, The Middle Ground Project offers a grounded record of how people are navigating shared landscapes. It highlights complexity, nuance and the everyday decisions that shape how we manage our environments.

It’s all about working together to create a better outcome for the planet and the people through listening, understanding and learning.

WHY IT MATTERS…

No two people stand on the land in quite the same way.

Each perspective carries its own knowledge, shaped by work, culture and connection to the land. When we listen to these stories without trying to win or convince, we open space for understanding.

In that shared space, working together becomes possible and the path forward can feel lighter for both people and land.

Bridging the gap between agriculture and conservation through real stories from the land.

A podcast and storytelling project sharing the voices of people who live and work on the land and sea — from paddock to bush, farm to coast.

THE TEAM

Emma Walters is the founder and host of The Middle Ground Project. Growing up along the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Emma developed a deep connection to the outdoors and a strong desire to protect the environments she spent time in. She is a wildlife biologist with hands-on experience across conservation and animal care, having worked as a zookeeper, in animal rescue and shelters and as a wildlife carer. She is currently working as a marine biologist on the Southern Great Barrier Reef.

Alongside her work with wildlife, Emma has a strong respect for the agricultural industry and the people who work on the land every day. She values the practical knowledge farmers build through close connection with their landscapes and the care they show for their livestock and crops. Through The Middle Ground Project, Emma brings these worlds together. Creating space for open conversation, shared understanding and collaboration between those who care deeply for land, animals and the future of both.
